More of Alpharetta was built in the 1990s than in any other decade: 9,081 of 26,223 homes, about 35 percent. Most are detached houses on subdivision lots, each with its own lateral to a Fulton County main.↗
Thirty years is about when those lines start to tell on themselves. Ornamental trees planted by the first owners have root systems that reach the pipe. Trench backfill that was never fully compacted settles and leaves low spots. Later patios, pools and driveway widenings bury cleanouts or put weight where it was never planned.
None of that is Fulton's to fix. The county's flyer says owners are responsible for a lateral that clogs, leaks or breaks between the building and the property line, and that the county will never repair laterals outside the right-of-way or easement.↗
