Walnut Grove's sewer is real, but it is small
Unlike the other small Walton towns around it, Walnut Grove treats its own wastewater. The city's Water Pollution Control Plant on Forrester Cemetery Road holds land-application permit GAJ040019, good for up to 0.05 million gallons of treated effluent per day, spread on land instead of discharged to a stream.↗
The city's 2022–2026 plan describes that system without mapping which parcels it serves. Your bill and your yard settle it: a city sewer charge means you are connected, and a tank lid means you are not.↗

The Walnut Grove story
Doubling the plant, and still a septic town at the edges
Growth pushed the plant first. The 2022 plan says the land-application expansion then under way would make room for about 155 more homes and 24,000 gallons a day of commercial use. In November 2024 GEFA lent the city $2,440,500 from the Georgia Fund to build a 0.10 million-gallon-per-day treatment plant, widen the land-application fields, upgrade pump stations and rehabilitate an oxidation pond.↗↗
Those numbers describe a system sized for a town center, not for every lot with a Walnut Grove address. The median home here was built in 1993, and the plan notes single-family subdivisions along local streets and around the city's edge. For buyers arriving from sewered suburbs, a house off the city system can be their first septic tank.↗↗
The crossroads sets the pace. State Route 138 carries just over 14,000 vehicles a day and State Route 81 just under 12,000, and GDOT logged 194 crashes where they meet from 2013 to 2020, the spot the plan picked for a roundabout. Off GA-81, the county's $42 million Grove Park opened on 126 donated acres in December 2025.↗↗

Central Walnut Grove maps as Cecil sandy clay loam on 2 to 6 percent slopes, severely eroded. That grade is kinder than much of Walton, but NRCS still calls the unit somewhat limited for absorption fields because water creeps through the clay.↗

Walnut Grove runs its own sewer through the Water Pollution Control Plant, but its comprehensive plan does not publish a parcel map, so the bill and the ground are the clearest evidence. What kind of sewer plant does Walnut Grove have?
A land-application plant. The Walnut Grove Water Pollution Control Plant at 884 Forrester Cemetery Road holds Georgia EPD permit GAJ040019, allowing up to 0.05 million gallons per day of treated wastewater to be applied to land. A GEFA-funded project announced in 2024 adds a 0.10 million-gallon-per-day plant.

Can I switch from septic to Walnut Grove city sewer?
Only where the city system is available and has room. Georgia rules require connection when public sewer lies within 200 feet of the property line, and a failing septic system must connect if sewer is available. Plant capacity is small and still growing, so ask the city about your parcel before budgeting for a tap or a septic repair.
Who fixes the water line to my house in Walnut Grove?
The Walton County Water Department supplies the city and owns its system up through the meter. From the meter to your house, the pipe, pressure-reducing valve and backflow valve are yours. That private run is the part we excavate and repair or replace when it leaks.

I just bought my first house with a septic tank in Walnut Grove. What should I do first?
Find the tank, get it pumped and keep the receipt. Walton County Environmental Health asks for proof of pumping within the last five years before it issues a satisfactory evaluation letter on an existing system, so that paper matters later. After that, keep vehicles, sheds and new plantings off the drain field.

Does septic work in Walnut Grove need a county permit?
Yes. Repairs need a Walton County Environmental Health repair permit and a specialist's inspection; the residential repair permit is $200 and a new-system inspection is $425 on the schedule effective August 1, 2024. We can act as your agent on the permit and arrange the inspection.
Is Walnut Grove's sewer plant big enough for new homes?
The city has been expanding it. The 2022 plan says the land-application expansion then under way would allow about 155 more homes and 24,000 gallons a day of commercial use, and a $2,440,500 GEFA loan in 2024 funds a 0.10 million-gallon-per-day plant. Allocation decisions belong to the city; septic remains the option off the system.
