A Jersey house sale starts at the tank lid
Jersey is small enough to count by hand: the Census estimate is 148 residents, and the median home dates to 1969. A tank put in with a house of that age is older than most first-time buyers. When one sells, the septic question tends to surface late, once a lender or buyer asks for proof the system works.↗
In Walton County that proof comes from an existing-system evaluation by Environmental Health. The county's service request form asks for a lot sketch and for evidence that the tank was pumped within the last five years. So the order of work matters: pump first, evaluate second. On a tank nobody has opened since the last sale, locating and digging out the lids comes before either.↗
There is no city line to fall back on. The town's comprehensive plan states that sewer is not available or planned inside the limits, and it asks new commercial projects to be septic-compatible. A failed evaluation in Jersey therefore ends in a repair permit and work on the lot itself, never a tap fee.↗

Sewer or septic?
No city sewer in Jersey, and none on the drawing board
Jersey's plan is blunt: sewer is not available within the town limits and is not planned for the near future. A shop opening on Main Street or out Monroe Jersey Road has to fit a septic system, the same as the houses beside it.↗
Water is the one utility the town runs itself, from a single municipal well. Walton County's lot-size ordinance sizes septic lots at 25,500 square feet on public water and 51,000 on a private well, so rural parcels outside town with their own wells face the larger figure.↗↗

Will Jersey ever get city sewer?
Not on any published schedule. Jersey's 2022–2026 comprehensive plan says sewer service is neither available nor planned within the town limits for the near future, and it tells new commercial development to be compatible with septic. For now, plan on maintaining, repairing and eventually replacing the septic system you already have.
How much does Walton County charge to evaluate an existing septic system?
The Walton County Environmental Health fee schedule effective August 1, 2024 lists $200 for a residential existing-system evaluation, $200 for a re-inspection and $200 for a residential repair permit. The county's service request form still prints older prices, so confirm the current amount with the office at 770-267-1430 before you file.
Is the soil in Jersey bad for drain fields?
Workable, but slow. USDA survey data map the town center as Cecil sandy clay loam on 6 to 10 percent slopes, severely eroded, rated somewhat limited for absorption fields because water moves slowly. Fields there need correct sizing and protection from uphill runoff, which is why an older field can struggle after a wet spell.

Where does Jersey, Georgia get its drinking water?

How often should a Jersey homeowner pump the septic tank?
Tank size and household size set the real interval, so no single number fits every house.
