The Between story
Between took its name from its place on the map, halfway between Monroe and Loganville. Both of those cities run public sewer. Between does not: its comprehensive plan says sewer is neither available nor planned inside town limits, so the stretch between two sewered cities is one where every lot handles its own wastewater.↗↗↗↗
The houses are not old. Census estimates put the median Between home at 1998 and the population at 482. A late-1990s system is in middle age now: the concrete tank is often sound, while a drain field that has taken a household's wastewater for 25 years is where trouble tends to show first.↗
US-78 is the spine. It carries more than 20,000 vehicles a day through town, and the New Hope Church Road intersection by the town hall logged 54 crashes from 2013 to 2020. On a highway-front lot, planning where the pump truck can pull off safely comes before any digging.↗

More about Between
The town plan steers commercial and manufacturing growth toward Heritage Parkway, home of Ayers Park and its splash pad. It also writes down a condition few towns spell out: new commercial development must be septic-compatible and use little water.↗
That puts the septic design at the front of any Between site plan. Walton County Environmental Health prices commercial septic inspections by daily flow, $550 for up to 1,000 gallons a day and $850 for 1,001 to 2,000, so the water a business expects to use shapes both the system and the permit bill. We install and repair commercial septic systems and handle the excavation and grading for the pad.↗

Soil & terrain
Between sits on lighter ground than much of Walton. USDA data map the town center as Cecil coarse sandy loam on 2 to 6 percent slopes, eroded. NRCS still rates it somewhat limited for absorption fields because of slow water movement, but it is a step up from the severely eroded clay units common elsewhere in the county.↗
Rock is the other constraint. A large granite outcrop lies inside town limits, and the plan treats it as a sensitive landscape that may hold rare species. Walton's site evaluation form makes the owner answerable for adverse conditions such as rock, so near exposed granite the first question is how deep the soil goes.↗↗
Streams trim lots as well. The Alcovy River and Big Flat, Bay and Beaverdam creeks run within about 2.5 miles of the center, and the county leaves a 50-foot strip beside any stream out of a lot's usable soil.↗
Sewer or septic?
The Walton County Water Department is responsible for all water infrastructure in Between, and the county's published rates cover water only. Sewer is simply not part of the town's utility picture.↗↗

(678) 863-5620Not in the current plan. Between's 2022–2026 comprehensive plan says sewer service is not available and not planned within town limits for the near future. The same plan requires new commercial development to work with septic and use little water, which signals that the town expects on-site systems to stay.
The New Georgia Encyclopedia says the name was chosen because the town sits halfway between Monroe and Loganville. It was settled in the 1850s and incorporated in 1908. For septic owners the name has a practical twist: both of those neighbors run public sewer, and Between sits in the unsewered gap.
On public water, which is how Between is served, Walton County's Board of Health ordinance requires at least 25,500 square feet of usable soil; a lot on its own well needs 51,000. Minimum widths also apply, and steep slopes or slow percolation call for more land. We check a lot against these rules before you buy.

Yes, if the use suits a septic system. The town plan requires new commercial development to be septic-compatible and low in water use, and Walton County Environmental Health charges $550 to inspect a commercial system handling up to 1,000 gallons a day. Heavy water users need the septic design settled early.
It can. Between's plan notes a large granite outcrop inside town limits, and the county's site evaluation form puts adverse conditions such as rock on the owner. A drain field needs enough soil above rock, so a lot near exposed granite deserves a site evaluation before house plans are fixed.
You do. The Walton County Water Department owns its system up to and including the meter; its policies put the service line, pressure-reducing valve and backflow valve on the customer's side. We locate the leak, excavate and repair or replace that private line.

Census Bureau estimates for 2020–2024 put the median Between home at 1998, so a typical system has been in the ground for well over two decades. At that age a pump-out plus a look at the tank outlet and drain field is a sensible check even when nothing seems wrong.
