The Conyers story
How the interstate moved Conyers' sewer load
Conyers started as Conyers Station on the Georgia Railroad, a village of about 400 people when it incorporated in 1854. Main Street in Olde Town was the business district for a century. Then I-20 came through in the 1960s, and commerce followed it: first to West Avenue and the interstate access roads, then south along Georgia Highway 20/138.↗
That strip is where most of the city's commercial plumbing now works hardest. Restaurants off exits 80 and 82 drain into Rockdale Water Resources sewer, and county code sets how big their grease interceptors must be: 15 gallons per seat, never under 750 gallons or over 3,000. An undersized or neglected trap pushes grease into the building sewer, and that pipe, under the parking lot, belongs to the property.↗↗
Wastewater shaped the other side of I-20 too. The 1,139 acres off GA 138 that became the Georgia International Horse Park were first picked out as a land-application site for treated wastewater, back when Rockdale was expanding its treatment system in the late 1980s. The Olympic equestrian events came later.↗

Sewer or septic?
Sewered in town, septic past the service area
The city itself handles stormwater and garbage pickup. The sanitary sewer under Conyers streets is Rockdale Water Resources' system, and where it doesn't reach, homes use septic tanks permitted by GNR Public Health's Rockdale office.↗↗
If a Conyers septic system fails and county sewer is available, Rockdale gives the owner 30 days after written notice to connect. The old tank is pumped and filled or removed, with the new line tied in upstream of it.↗

Housing era
1989 subdivisions and an older mill village
Half of Conyers' homes are newer than 1989 and half are older. A lateral laid around then is now well past 35 years in red clay, so roots at the joints and sags where the trench settled are what we check for first.↗
The Milstead mill village, two miles north of Olde Town on the Yellow River, is a different story. Milstead Manufacturing, later Callaway Mills, employed about 700 workers until it closed in 1960, and the bungalow-style houses built for them still stand. Lines under those yards are much older than the median.↗

No. The Conyers Rockdale Economic Development Council describes Rockdale Water Resources as the sole water and sewer supplier in Rockdale County, and that includes Conyers. The city runs stormwater and sanitation. For a main break in the street, call the county utility; for your own lateral, call a contractor.

What size grease trap does a Conyers restaurant need?
Rockdale County code sizes grease interceptors at 15 gallons per seat, with a 750-gallon minimum and a 3,000-gallon maximum. A 60-seat dining room works out to 900 gallons. The rule applies to commercial food preparation connected to county sewer, which covers restaurants along the I-20 access roads and GA 20/138.
Is the broken sewer pipe in my Conyers yard my responsibility?
Almost always. Under Sec. 98-10 the county owns the sewer service line from the main to the street right-of-way, and the owner owns everything from there to the house, including the cleanout at the right-of-way limit. A break between your foundation and that cleanout is a private repair.

What does Rockdale Water Resources charge to set up sewer service at an existing Conyers building?
Its fee page lists a $50 non-refundable administrative fee to establish new or transferred service where water and sewer already exist, and $200 to apply for new sewer service on a new development. Contractor work on the private line is separate and is quoted on site.
Why was the Georgia International Horse Park land connected to wastewater?
Before it hosted Olympic equestrian events, the 1,139-acre tract off GA 138 north of I-20 was identified as a site for land application of wastewater, while Rockdale expanded its treatment system in the late 1980s. It shows how long sewer capacity has shaped land use around Conyers.
Where does a sewage spill in Conyers end up?
Downhill and downstream. The city's stormwater department says most stormwater leaving Conyers ends up in Jackson Lake, so an overflowing cleanout or trap that reaches a storm drain travels a long way. Stop water use, keep people away from the spill, and get the private line opened up.
