Who owns what

Your run versus the city's collection system

McDonough's sewer chapter defines the building sewer as the extension from the building drain to the public sewer, and puts its cost on the owner.

Warning signs

Clues the problem is outside your foundation

A single slow sink is usually indoors. These patterns point to the buried line.

Seeing two or more of these? Call before it gets worse.

  • 1. Toilets and tubs back up together, worst at the lowest fixture
  • 2. Water bubbles back into the shower when the washing machine drains
  • 3. Sewage odor near the yard cleanout or along the path to the street
  • 4. A soft or sunken strip of lawn between the house and the sidewalk
  • 5. Drains that clear after snaking, then choke again at the same footage

The Mcdonough story

Newer pipe, familiar failures

Much of McDonough's plumbing is young, laid in the 2000s subdivision surge. Young does not mean trouble-free. Settled trenches pull joints apart, landscaping roots find a weeping coupling, and builders' cleanouts end up buried under mulch or pavers.

A frequent culprit here is stormwater that should never have been in the sewer. The city forbids tying downspouts, foundation drains or other runoff into a building sewer that reaches the public system, so an illegal connection we find during a repair has to come out.

Everything that leaves your lateral ends up at the Walnut Creek plant north of town. Protecting that plant's capacity is why the city cares what goes into your line.

On the record

  • McDonough's code bars roof downspouts, foundation drains and other runoff from any building sewer that connects to the public system.
  • The city's Walnut Creek Water Pollution Control Plant can treat 2 million gallons a day and averages about 1 million.

How we repair a McDonough lateral

First we find the access point. If the builder's cleanout is lost, we locate it or cut in a new one, then run a camera to the connection. The footage shows whether we are dealing with roots, an offset joint, a belly or a crushed section, and a sonde marks it on the surface.

The dig is sized to the defect. We cut out the bad length, install new pipe at a uniform grade in straight alignment, and keep the line off any bearing wall, as the building sewer section of the code requires.

Before backfill we run water and film the repair again. If the camera shows more failing joints toward the street, we will tell you whether a full replacement makes more sense than a second patch next year.

  • Under § 13.08.060(C), all costs of the building sewer and its connection to the property line belong to the owner.

Houses and businesses near the square

At a house, a repair is usually one four-inch line and an afternoon of digging. Restaurants and food businesses are different because grease is the first suspect.

McDonough requires grease interceptors to be pumped out completely every 90 days with a manifest sent to the city, and it bans enzyme or bacterial additives. When a commercial line keeps backing up, we check the interceptor records before we cut pavement.

  • The city charges a $50 re-inspection fee on the water bill each time a grease system has to be checked again for compliance.

Will the City of McDonough pay to fix my broken sewer line?

Not on your side. The code assigns every cost of the building sewer out to the property line to the owner. Collection lines and manholes in the public system are Public Works' job, so a camera showing where the break sits settles the question.

Can I reuse my old sewer pipe if I'm rebuilding the house?

Only if the city examines and tests it and it passes. McDonough's section 13.08.060(E) otherwise requires a new building sewer for the new structure.

My gutters drain into a pipe near the sewer cleanout. Is that allowed?

No. McDonough prohibits connecting downspouts, foundation drains or other surface water to a building sewer that feeds the public system. We reroute it to the yard during the repair.

How much does sewer line repair cost in McDonough?

HomeGuide's national figures run $150 to $3,800 for a repair and $2,000 to $10,000 to replace about 40 feet. Depth, concrete and how much pipe has failed decide the real price, which we give on site at no charge.

Who do I call if sewage is overflowing from a manhole in the street?

The city. McDonough's Water Distribution & Sewer Collection division handles collection piping and manholes and lists an on-call water emergency line, 678-274-8737.

How often must a McDonough restaurant pump its grease trap?

At least every 90 days, completely, with the manifest faxed or mailed to the city within 24 hours. The city may order more frequent pumping.
