The Almon area covers roughly 3,150 acres along Almon and Crowell roads, and nearly every home out there treats its own wastewater. Five named streams run within about two and a half miles of the crossroads: the Yellow River, Gum Creek, Little Gum Creek, Big Haynes Creek and Beaverdam Creek.↗↗

Appling ground on the ridges, wet bottoms by the creeks
USDA maps the Almon crossroads itself as Appling soils mixed with developed land on 2 to 10 percent slopes. Appling is deep and drains well, with rock and the seasonal water table both below 60 inches, which is friendlier to a drain field than much of the county. The catch is the clay subsoil, which slows how fast effluent soaks in, and the bottomland soils near each creek, which flood.↗↗
