Why 20-year-old Ellenwood lines back up
The typical Ellenwood house is not old. In ZIP 30294 the median home dates to 1999, and thousands went up in the 2000s building boom. But a lateral that is twenty-some years into service has had time for trench backfill to settle, for joints to shift, and for landscaping roots to find a way in.↗
Groundwater is the other culprit. Cracked laterals and loose manhole lids let rainwater into the sewer, and the county's own logs show it. In February 2020 DeKalb recorded an inflow-and-infiltration overflow from a manhole lid at 4124 Flakes Mill Road in Ellenwood. The same address turned up again weeks later, this time from contractors draining an aeration tank toward the South River.↗
