The Stonecrest story
Newer houses, but not problem-free pipes
Most Stonecrest houses are younger than their neighbors in Lithonia. The American Community Survey puts the middle of the housing stock at 1999, so a typical lateral here has been in service for about twenty-five years. That is not old for sewer pipe, yet we still see failures, and they tend to come from the ground and the grading rather than from age alone.↗
Much of the city is built on the Ashlar-Wedowee soils mapped on 10 to 25 percent slopes. Ashlar is only moderately deep, with hard rock showing up between 20 and 40 inches down. When a builder had to lay a lateral across that, the pipe could end up shallow in places, bedded on broken rock in others, or pushed off grade where fill settled over time. Those are the conditions that produce offset joints and low spots years later.↗
Water is the other factor. Stonecrest holds a long list of creeks and ponds, and backyards that slope toward them carry runoff across the line. Saturated clay over rock moves, and moving soil is hard on pipe joints.↗

How the repair goes on a rocky, sloped lot
A camera inspection comes first so the dig is as short as possible. On Stonecrest lots it also tells us how deep the pipe runs, which matters when rock is close to the surface. Where a joint has shifted or a short run has settled, a targeted repair is often enough. Where a long stretch has lost its fall, the pipe is re-laid on proper bedding so it drains on its own again.
Slopes add steps. Trenches on a grade need shoring and erosion control, and backfill has to be compacted so the next storm does not wash it out. After the repair, the line is flushed, filmed and the yard is graded back.

My house was built around 2000. Why would the sewer line fail?
Age is only one cause. On Stonecrest's shallow, rocky soils, settling fill, poor bedding and shifting joints can cause trouble in pipe that is only a couple of decades old.

No. DeKalb requires written permission before anyone taps a county water main, and replacing an existing service is handled as a new connection application.
Why do my backups happen after storms?
Sloped lots near Stonecrest's creeks shed a lot of water. A cracked or offset lateral lets groundwater and silt in, which overloads the pipe during rain.
