A mill town built at the water's edge
Porterdale grew where the Yellow River drops over Cedar Shoals, which means its lowest streets sit close to a river that drains a big piece of metro Atlanta. The USGS gage at Porterdale measures a drainage area of 401 square miles upstream.↗
In September 2009, USGS gages on the Yellow River upstream in Gwinnett, DeKalb and Rockdale counties measured flows between 100-year and 200-year flood magnitude. When that basin floods, saturated ground pushes groundwater into cracked old laterals and swamps any remaining septic fields. FEMA maps a 1%-annual-chance flood zone along the river at the mill site.↗↗
