What 1980s Redan houses tend to have underground
A median build year of 1986 puts much of Redan squarely inside the polybutylene years. InterNACHI dates PB manufacture from 1978 to mid-1995 and notes that blue PB was mostly used outdoors for cold water, which is exactly where a service line runs. PB tends to fail from the inside, so one patched leak is often followed by another.↗↗

In November 2024 DeKalb announced that its federally required inventory found no known lead pipes in the public system. That review covered only the county's section from the main to the meter. Owners were told the material of their private line was unknown, and the county asked residents to fill out a voluntary survey describing the pipe entering the home.↗
When we uncover a service line during a repair, we note the material so you can answer that survey accurately. Replacing an old line with modern pipe also closes the question for good.

My house was built in the mid-1980s. Could the service line be polybutylene?
It is possible. PB was made from 1978 to mid-1995, and Redan's median home dates to 1986. We confirm by looking at the pipe.
Does DeKalb know if my line has lead?
Not for the private part. The county's 2024 inventory covered only its own side and listed private line material as unknown.

Do I need to call 811 to replace my own water line?
Yes, before machine digging. Georgia 811 asks for at least three business days' notice so gas, power and other buried utilities can be marked.

Can you repair just the leaking spot?
Often, yes, on copper or newer plastic. On polybutylene we usually recommend replacing the run because new leaks tend to follow.
