Social Circle measures sewer reach at 300 feet, not 200
Most Georgia homeowners hear about the state's 200-foot test. Social Circle's own code reaches further. Section 11-53(d) says an owner whose building abuts a street or right-of-way carrying a city sewer must install toilet facilities at their own expense and connect them, as long as that sewer is within 300 feet of the property line.↗
The same section makes it unlawful, with exceptions, to build or keep a septic tank, privy or cesspool inside the city. So a septic system here is tolerated only where no public sewer is close enough. When a line is extended past your lot, the clock starts: Section 11-54(e) gives 60 days to make a direct connection.↗↗

Why so many Social Circle lots are rethinking the tank
The city is growing its treatment side. A planned plant on the Little River would lift capacity from 666,000 gallons a day at Vine Circle to 1.5 million, with room for 3 million. More capacity usually means more line extensions, and every extension brings neighboring septic lots inside the 300-foot reach.↗
The pipe already in the ground is mixed. The city's draft plan estimates that roughly half of its own sewer pipe is terra cotta and says older subdivision lift stations should give way to gravity lines as money allows. A new house lateral in PVC ties into whatever sits at the street, so we confirm the main's depth and condition before we set grade.↗

Homes and ordinary businesses fall under the same $5 building sewer permit class. A downtown shop off Cherokee Road usually adds saw-cutting and sidewalk repair.↗
Anything producing industrial waste is a separate $25 class and must meet EPA and Georgia EPD rules before it connects. The superintendent can also require grease, oil or sand interceptors for a business, though not for private homes, and can order a control manhole for sampling on an industrial line.↗↗

How long do I have once sewer reaches my lot?
Section 11-54(e) requires a direct connection within 60 days after a public sewer becomes available to a property on septic.
What happens to my old septic tank?
It gets abandoned: the sludge is cleaned out and the tank is filled with clean bank-run gravel, dirt or other suitable material.
What does the city charge for the sewer permit?
The code lists $5 for a residential or commercial building sewer permit and inspection, and $25 for an industrial one. We have not found a published tap or capacity fee, so ask city utilities before you budget.
Can my garage apartment share the house's sewer line?
Usually not. Every building needs its own building sewer. The exception is a rear building on an interior lot where no private sewer can reach it.
Can I tie my gutters into the new line?
No. Roof downspouts, foundation drains and other surface water are barred from any building sewer that reaches the public system.
My lot is on the Newton County side. Does this still apply?
Yes, if the lot is inside city limits near a city main. Chapter 11 governs the sewer tie-in on either side of the county line.
