The best local evidence of what's underground comes from the county itself. DeKalb's Barbashela Creek Sewer Replacement Project, a gravity sewer rehabilitation announced to Stone Mountain residents in October 2022, handed out door hangers warning of rock blasting. Its contractor monitored vibrations at nearby properties while crews broke stone to lay pipe.↗↗
A private lateral is a far smaller job, but it's cut into the same ground. The dome rises 825 feet above the land around it, and the rock body continues underground well beyond the park. Some lots dig clean clay to the street. Others hit a ledge within a couple of feet.↗
We don't blast for house laterals. Where rock turns up, the options are a hydraulic breaker, rerouting around the shelf, or a shallower run where code and slope allow. Knowing which one applies before the trench opens is the difference between an honest estimate and a change order.
