The Bostwick story
A cotton-mill founder's grid that got water lines, not sewer
John Bostwick built a cotton oil mill here in 1901, later the Bostwick Manufacturing Company, and helped run a rail spur to the Central of Georgia line at Apalachee. In 1908 he had 122 house lots surveyed south of Main Street. Much of today's residential core still follows that grid.↗
The cotton identity lingered: the town hosted a Cotton Gin Festival for years, though the city now says it no longer does and promotes a Fourth of July BBQ instead. What never arrived was a sewer. Water came through a small city system, and each lot kept its own tank.↗↗
The county plan's Historic Residential area, bounded by Highway 83, 2nd Street, Nunn Lane and Malcolm Road, is mostly pre-war homes on large lots. Septic records for houses that old can be thin, so finding the tank is often the first step.↗
