The Statham story
The basin line runs through town
Statham grew up around a railroad. The Seaboard line came through in 1890 and 1891, the town incorporated in 1892, and its limits still reach one mile in each direction from the depot. The post office started out as Barber's Creek.↗
That circle does not line up with the sewer. Barrow's joint plan says Statham is only partly inside the county's sewer basin, and it flags aging city sewer lines that need repair and reconstruction. Near the depot, the question is a cracked lateral. Out toward Dooley Town Road, it is usually a tank.↗
The city has tried to shrink the septic side. A 2006 ordinance lets owners of homes on septic pre-buy a sewer connection, and it says the council wants those homes moved over as lines extend.↗

Madison loam downtown, eroded Pacolet slopes outside
The depot area maps as Madison sandy loam on gentle 2 to 6 percent slopes. It rates somewhat limited for drain fields because water moves slowly. On the north and southwest edges, the map turns to eroded Pacolet on 10 to 15 percent slopes, where the grade is the main problem.↗
Statham also drinks from its own watershed. The city intake is on the Barber Creek Reservoir, and code bans tanks and drain fields within the 150-foot impervious setback along streams feeding it.↗
