The Canton story
Septic in a sewered city
Most of Canton flushes to the city plant. The exceptions are written into the code by name: septic is allowed in the Governors Walk and Great Sky subdivisions, and on lots of two acres and larger where the city line doesn't reach. Those are the systems this page is about.↗
Canton layers its own limits on top of the health rules. No septic system may sit on a lot under 20,000 square feet, and each system may serve only one home or one commercial building. The city also wants a street address before its water system issues a septic approval letter.↗
The ground here is the harder part. Right in the middle of town, near the Etowah, the USDA maps Wickham fine sandy loam and rates it very limited for septic absorption fields: the bottom layer lets effluent seep through too quickly to be treated, and water moves slowly through the layers above. A drain field that fails on soil like that often needs redesign, not just new pipe.↗↗
