Is Canton, GA on sewer or septic?
Mostly city sewer. Canton's code requires homes within 300 feet of a sewer line to connect, but it allows septic in the Governors Walk and Great Sky subdivisions and on lots of two acres or more without sewer. Which one is your Canton house on?
Canton's wastewater chapter is unusually specific. Septic tanks, privies and any other disposal besides the city system are prohibited except in the Governors Walk or Great Sky subdivisions, or under the private-disposal article. Outside Governors Walk, a lot of two acres or more may use septic when city sewer isn't available.↗
Availability has a precise meaning here. For an existing single-family home, sewer counts as available when the main floor can drain by gravity to a line in a right-of-way or easement passing within 300 feet. When the city sends written notice of availability, the owner has three months to connect.↗

The Canton story
A denim town that tripled
Canton was named in 1834 by boosters who hoped to make it a silk center. Silk never came, but cotton did: the Canton Cotton Mills made a denim sold as Canton Denim until the mills closed in 1981. The Etowah River runs east to west through the middle of town, past the old mill district and today's Heritage Park greenway.↗
Then the suburbs arrived. Canton's population nearly tripled between 2000 and 2010, and the housing shows it: the median home was built in 2005. Yet the census still counts 798 homes from 1939 or earlier, the mill-village and downtown stock, so a Canton service call can mean a pre-war lateral one day and a 2006 septic tank the next.↗↗
The city has been building to keep up. Its wastewater plant is being expanded to 7 million gallons a day with membrane filtration, and the city holds a quarter share of the Hickory Log Creek raw-water reservoir north of downtown, completed in 2007 with the Cobb County-Marietta Water Authority.↗↗

Can I put in a septic system on my land in Canton?
Only where city sewer isn't available, and generally on two acres or more; Governors Walk lots are the exception to the two-acre rule.
