The short answer

How do you install a septic system in Flovilla, GA?

Every Flovilla home needs its own septic system because the town has no sewer. Butts County Environmental Health, part of District 4 Public Health, issues the construction permit from a lot sketch and inspects before cover. On Flovilla's sloping, eroded Pacolet clay, the field layout matters most. We design, permit and install systems.

The Flovilla story

Growth headed for a town without sewer

Flovilla's plan looked north and saw pressure coming. It cites a regional projection that neighboring Henry County would add a quarter of a million residents by 2030 and expects some of that growth to spill into Butts and Flovilla.

New homes here arrive on city well water and nothing else. Outside the core, the plan's rural residential areas favor large lots and conservation-style subdivisions, and it expects both site-built and manufactured homes. Every one of them needs a septic permit before a foundation or pad goes down.

On the record

  • Flovilla's plan cites an Atlanta Regional Commission projection that Henry County will add 250,000 residents by 2030, with some growth likely to spill into Butts County and Flovilla.
  • The plan's Rural Residential character area promotes rural cluster zoning, conservation subdivisions and large lots, with single-family and mobile home residences.

Choices you make on the District 4 form

The new residential application has a few decisions built into it. We fill it out with you and serve as agent if you like.
  1. 01

Preferred system: conventional gravel, chamber, EZ-Flow or another approved type. On slopes, lightweight chamber or EZ-Flow lines are easier to set along the contour.

  2. 02

Type of facility: a house, a mobile or manufactured home, or a detached garage or shop, with a note on whether the outbuilding has plumbing.

  3. 03

The lot sketch marks paved areas, buried utilities, easements, any flood plain and where the proposed field would go.

  4. 04

The permit expires 12 months after issue, and the system is inspected before it is covered.

More about Flovilla

Designing for Flovilla's hillsides

The town-center soil, Pacolet sandy clay loam on 6 to 15 percent slopes, is well drained but severely eroded, and NRCS lists slope along with slow water movement as limits for fields. That combination shapes the design: trenches run level along the contour, spaced so one line does not feed the next downhill.

We also keep roof downspouts and driveway runoff off the field area, and we avoid placing a field at the foot of a slope where surface water collects after storms.

If you are adding a pool, garage or outbuilding later, District 4 asks owners of septic homes to contact the county office and apply first, so leave room in the plan now.

Warning signs

Before you buy a Flovilla lot, look for these

Seeing two or more of these? Call before it gets worse.

  • 1. Bare, gullied clay where topsoil has already washed away
  • 2. A slope steep enough that a mower struggles across it
  • 3. The only flat ground sitting at the bottom of a drainage path
  • 4. A creek, pond or wet-weather ditch cutting through the back of the lot
  • 5. No room left for a second field area if the first one fails

Flovilla septic installation: questions

Can I connect a new Flovilla home to sewer?

No. Flovilla provides water only, and the city's plan lists a future wastewater capital plan as a goal. So a new Flovilla house gets its own tank and field, with the permit issued by the county health office.

Where do I apply for the septic permit?

At the county health department building in Jackson, 463 Ernest Biles Drive, where District 4 runs Butts County Environmental Health. Call (770) 504-2230 and ask for extension 3; hours are weekdays 8 to 5, closed at lunch.

What kind of septic system works on a Flovilla slope?

The District 4 form lets you request conventional gravel, chamber or EZ-Flow lines. On the sloping Pacolet clay common here, we usually favor contour-laid lines; the county makes the final call from the site evaluation.

Does a manufactured home need the same permit?

Yes. The new residential application covers a house, a mobile or manufactured home, or a detached building with plumbing, and each needs a permitted system sized to its bedrooms.

How much does a new septic system cost?

HomeGuide's 2026 range is $3,500 to $8,500 for a conventional system and $4,000 to $11,000 for a chambered one. A 1,000-gallon tank for three bedrooms is $1,000 to $1,500 on its own.

Will growth bring sewer to Flovilla soon?

Nothing public says so. The city's plan anticipates growth spilling over from Henry County and hopes for a wastewater capital plan, but no project or timeline is published. Plan on septic.
