An older housing stock than the rest of Clayton
The typical Jonesboro house was built in 1972, seventeen years ahead of the county's median. Dig into the age table and the older tail shows: 150 homes date to 1939 or before, 85 to the 1940s, 374 to the 1950s and 355 to the 1960s. Together those pre-1970 houses are close to 45% of the city's 2,167 units.↗

The Jonesboro story
Leaksville, the railroad and the courthouse square
The town began as Leaksville in 1823 and took the name Jonesboro in 1846, when the railroad came through, after railroad official Samuel Goode Jones. It incorporated in 1859 and remains the county seat. The Battle of Jonesborough in early September 1864 was the last fight of the Atlanta campaign.↗
Much of that past is protected. The Jonesboro Historic District, centered where GA 54 meets GA 3, went on the National Register on January 20, 1972, and includes the Clayton County Courthouse. Stately Oaks, an 1839 house now in Margaret Mitchell Memorial Park off Jodeco Road, was listed that same spring.↗↗

The city's Historic Preservation Commission reviews exterior changes in its H-1 and H-2 districts, and its application lists driveways, walkways and mechanical systems among site changes.
