Shady Dale grew up around 1880 on the site of a former Creek settlement and was incorporated in 1889. Its center is still the meeting of State Routes 83 and 142, a crossing the county plan says is run by five stop signs and backs up on weekends, holidays and UGA game days.↗↗
The town's water comes from wells, pumped to about 168 service connections. Wastewater never leaves the property. Soil & terrain
The map unit at the crossroads is eroded Cecil sandy clay loam on gentle 2 to 6 percent slopes. Erosion has thinned the sandy surface layer, so trenches sit closer to the red clay subsoil, and the field has to be sized for how slowly that clay takes water.↗
Town sits on a drainage split. The west side runs to Murder Creek, where USGS keeps a gauge just outside town; the east side runs toward the Little River and on to the Oconee. We keep new trenches out of low, wet draws on either side.↗↗
