The Stone Mountain story
Old village houses, acidic clay and steel pipe
Some of Stone Mountain's houses are genuinely old. The Census counts 152 homes built in 1939 or earlier, a little over 5 percent of the city's housing. Houses that old have often had their water service replaced once, but not always.↗
The ground is hard on metal pipe. NRCS rates the Cecil soil mapped at the city center as highly corrosive to uncoated steel and moderately corrosive to concrete. A galvanized service line buried in that clay for decades tends to rust from the outside in, while mineral scale narrows it from the inside.↗
Lead is a smaller concern. DeKalb reported in November 2024 that its service line inventory found no lead pipes, though owners of older homes can still report their line material to the county.↗

Repair a section or replace the run?
A single leak in newer copper or plastic pipe can often be dug out and repaired in a few hours. Galvanized steel is another matter: when one spot has rusted through, the rest of the run has usually thinned too, and patching tends to move the leak a few feet down the line.
