The Braselton story
From a farm town to Georgia's growth leader
Braselton began as farmland: Harrison Braselton bought 786 acres north of the Hosch plantation, settlement took hold in 1884, and the legislature made it a town in 1916. As late as 2000, just 1,206 people lived here.↗
Then came the subdivisions. The 2010 count was 7,511, and a 2024 estimate of 17,390 made Braselton the fastest-growing town in the state. The median home dates to 2011, so most lines here are young.↗↗
Growth also spread the town across county lines through annexation. Today one Braselton neighborhood can sit in Jackson County while another is in Gwinnett, Barrow or Hall. Sewer and water are town services, but the office that controls a septic tank changes with the county.↗

Braselton is doubling its plant because demand keeps coming: council approved $47.94 million in revenue bonds in 2025 to take capacity to about 2.5 million gallons a day. Each new hookup is priced per dwelling unit on the town's schedule.↗
The water may come from farther away than the sewer goes. Barrow County sells treated water to the town wholesale, so a Braselton meter says little about where the drain leads. Look for a sewer charge on the town bill.↗

Two samples in and near town came back as eroded upland soils: Gwinnett clay loam on steep slopes to the west and Pacolet on moderate slopes toward the 30517 ZIP center. Both hold trenches well and move water poorly.↗

A town that has changed hands before
Few Georgia towns were ever mostly bought by a movie star. In 1989 Kim Basinger's group paid $20 million for 1,751 of Braselton's 2,000 private acres, then sold them for $4.3 million in 1995. Nearly all of the town's housing went up after that sale.↗
