The Fairburn story
The railroad town that took the county seat
In the 1850s Campbellton, then the Campbell County seat, refused to let the Atlanta & West Point Railroad through, worried about the noise. The line went through Fairburn instead, named for Fairburn in England, and in 1871 a referendum moved the county seat here. Campbellton faded.↗
Campbell County itself went bankrupt in 1931 and became part of Fulton at the start of 1932. Today Fairburn sits on I-85 about 20 miles from downtown Atlanta, with GA 74 running 13 miles south to Peachtree City, and it hosts the Georgia Renaissance Festival each spring.↗

For a town that was a county seat in 1871, Fairburn's housing is remarkably young. The median home dates to 2004; 2,685 of 6,479 units went up between 2000 and 2009, and only about 350 predate 1960.↗
