The Union City story
A 1908 town that doubled its footprint
The General Assembly incorporated Union City in 1908. Depending on which source you believe, the name honors a union of rail lines or a Farmer's Union that once had its headquarters here.↗
The modern city is much newer than its charter. In 2006 Union City took in 5,300 acres to the west, bringing it to 10,827 acres, and the South Fulton Parkway corridor, including Atlanta Metro Studios, became its growth zone. The median home in the city now dates to 2002, and 4,129 of 11,861 homes were built between 2000 and 2009.↗↗

What the sewer code still says about pipe
Union City's sewer-use article sets building sewers at a minimum of four-inch vitrified clay or four-inch cast-iron soil pipe, sloped at least an eighth of an inch per foot, with a cleanout wherever the line changes direction. It even spells out lead-and-oakum joints for cast iron.↗
That language dates from an older era of plumbing, and a newer home may well have plastic. What matters for a repair is the rule next to it: an old building sewer can serve a new building only after the city examines and tests it (Sec. 15-199(e)).↗

Sewer first, septic only where there's no line
Owners of buildings on a street with a public sewer must hook up within 90 days of official notice when the line is within 100 feet of the property line (Sec. 15-197(d)). Private septic systems are allowed only where sewer isn't available, need a county health permit, and can't be permitted on a lot under 20,000 square feet or where percolation is slower than 45 minutes per inch.↗
