The Palmetto story
An 1854 town on two counties
The General Assembly incorporated Palmetto as a town in 1854, naming it for the Palmetto Regiment of the Mexican–American War. It began in Campbell County, became part of Fulton when Campbell was absorbed, and today part of the city lies in Coweta County.↗
It's still small: 5,071 residents in 2020, and the Census counted about 12% of them as living in rural areas. Growth has come in pieces, with subdivisions like Palmetto Oaks, Carlton Point and Princeton Village and a planned Cotton Mill renovation listed in Fulton County's sewer projections.↗↗

Palmetto still produces its own drinking water. The city's Public Works Water Department does that, maintains the water and sewer service lines, and inspects every new water and sewer connection to the mains. The city bills water, sewer, garbage and electric from City Hall on Toombs Street.↗↗
The wastewater leaves town in one place. Fulton County's 2021 capacity study notes that all of Palmetto's flow enters the county system at a single manhole near the Ono Road Pump Station, under a 1.00 MGD allocation the city was using at 0.75 MGD in 2019.↗

Under Sec. 24-75, owners on a street with public sewer must connect within 90 days of notice if the line is within 100 feet of the property line. Where sewer isn't available, a private system is allowed, but once sewer reaches it the owner has 60 days after notice to connect, and the tank must be cleaned of sludge and filled (Sec. 24-76).↗

Bear, Persimmon and Bishop creeks and Peeks Branch drain the area around town.
