Plain definitions

Four terms that decide which price applies

Conventional system
A septic tank feeding gravel or pipe trenches by gravity, the baseline design that alternative systems are priced against.
Chamber system
A drain field built from open-bottom plastic chambers instead of aggregate trenches, one of the two standard absorption designs in Georgia's rules.
Alternative system
Any Georgia on-site design that differs from a conventional or chamber layout, such as an aerobic unit, mound or drip field, and must be on DPH's approved list.
Building sewer (lateral)
The private pipe carrying wastewater from the house to the public main; its length and depth drive most sewer quotes.

The whole story

What makes the same job cost more east of Atlanta?

Soil is the biggest hidden multiplier. The Cecil series that blankets much of the Piedmont carries a firm red clay subsoil (NRCS), and effluent moves through it slowly. Slow soil means more trench per bedroom, and sometimes a chamber, drip or mound design instead of plain gravel lines. That single fact can move a new-system budget from the $6,397 end of the range toward $20,000.

Depth and access come next. A tank behind a fence with no gate wide enough for a machine can turn a one-day job into a hand-dig.

Then there is paperwork. In Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale, any repair or new system waits on a Level 3 soil report from a certified classifier, a separate bill that Septic & Well Pro puts at $500 to $1,500. Walton, Morgan and DeKalb run their own site evaluations and charge their own fees, shown in the table above.

From our job files.

Worth knowing

Is it cheaper to repair, replace or connect to sewer?

For a septic owner, the cheapest fix is usually the smallest part that actually failed: a baffle, a pump, a crushed distribution box. Those stay in the hundreds to low thousands. A field that has stopped accepting water is a different budget, and replacing it can rival a new conventional system.

Connecting to public sewer only competes when a main runs close by. Georgia's rules expect new construction to connect when sewer sits within 200 feet of the property line, and a failing system may have to connect if sewer is available. Add the contractor's lateral, the utility's fees and tank abandonment before comparing. Our septic vs sewer cost guide runs that math in full.

How much does a new septic system cost in Georgia in 2026?

Septic & Well Pro's June 2026 Georgia figures start at $6,397 to $7,600 for a conventional three-bedroom gravity system. Chamber systems run $7,000 to $12,000, drip dispersal $8,000 to $18,000, and mound or aerobic systems $10,000 to $20,000. The county soil evaluation decides which design your lot may use.

What does it cost to replace a drain field in Georgia?

HomeGuide's 2026 range for replacing a drain field is $3,000 to $15,000, and moving it to fresh ground runs $5,500 to $21,500. Partial repairs or rejuvenation fall between $1,000 and $5,000. In Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale, add the cost of the Level 3 soil report GNR Public Health requires before it issues any repair permit.

Why is an aerobic septic system so much more expensive?

An aerobic treatment unit adds an air pump, controls, an alarm and extra treatment chambers to the basic tank, and it needs electricity and scheduled servicing for as long as it runs. Septic & Well Pro prices Georgia ATU systems at $10,000 to $20,000 in 2026, about the same as a mound, versus roughly $6,400 to $7,600 for a conventional layout.

HomeGuide's national range for converting a septic home to sewer is $3,000 to $15,000. Utility charges come on top: NCWSA lists a $3,650 residential sewer fee plus a $75 tap inspection, and Gwinnett's residential conversion carries a $4,172 system development charge plus permit. NCWSA estimates the private line itself at $50 to $100 per foot.

How much does it cost to replace a main water line to the house?

HomeGuide reports most main water line replacements total $2,000 to $5,000, while HomeAdvisor's 2026 figures put trenched replacement at $50 to $250 per foot. A short repair runs $400 to $1,500. Length, depth and paving over the route explain most of the spread.

Does red clay really make septic work cost more?

It can. NRCS describes Cecil, a dominant Piedmont soil, as having a firm red clay subsoil, and slow soil needs more absorption area for the same house. More trench, a chamber design, or an alternative system all raise the price.
