What does septic installation involve in Monroe, GA?
Outside Monroe's sewer lines, a new system starts with Walton County Environmental Health's site evaluation form, a staked building site and a lot sketch. The county checks soil and setbacks, issues a construction permit, and inspects the tank and field before cover. The residential inspection fee is $425.↗↗

The Monroe story
Two thousand Monroe water taps with no sewer behind them
Monroe's utility treats drinking water for about 8,800 customers, yet its Jack's Creek plant collects wastewater from only about 6,700. The difference is mostly houses on the city's water pipes that still flush into a tank in the yard, and new homes going up on county roads around town join that group every year.↗↗
Before anyone designs a tank, we check whether a public sewer sits within 200 feet of the property line or in an abutting right-of-way. Georgia requires the connection in that case, and no septic permit will be issued. Past that distance, the lot gets a system of its own.↗

Soil & terrain
What the ground does to a Monroe design
Soil sets the length of the field. Georgia sizes the absorption area to the wastewater flow and to the soil receiving it, so a slow clay lot simply needs more trench than a sandy one.↗
Around Monroe the survey swings between two very different grounds within a few miles. East of downtown sits Lloyd clay loam, where the map unit data places weathered rock at roughly 50 inches. South of town the survey shows Appling coarse sandy loam on gentle 2 to 6 percent slopes. That contrast can change the trench layout on neighboring parcels.↗
Lloyd clay loam, 6–10% slopes, severely eroded (LeC3)↗
Maps about 1.7 miles east of downtown Monroe; minimum depth to bedrock listed at 127 cm; rated for slow water movement and depth to bedrock.
Appling coarse sandy loam, 2–6% slopes, eroded (AxB2)↗
Maps about 1.9 miles south of downtown; well drained, no bedrock listed within the surveyed depth.

From bare lot to covered field in Walton County
- 01
File the Site Evaluation Form listing water supply, bedrooms, garbage disposal, house design and the system type planned: gravel, chamber or alternative.↗
- 02
Attach a lot sketch showing setbacks, wells on your lot and the neighbors', paved areas, buried utilities, the plumbing stub-out, easements and any flood plain.↗
- 03
Stake the building site before the county visits. The form puts rock or a high water table on the applicant, so we dig test holes early on rocky ground.↗
- 04
Build within the permit's life, which Georgia caps at 12 months, then leave everything open for the Environmental Health Specialist's inspection.↗
More about Monroe
Tank size follows the floor plan
Georgia's formula for a house is 1,000 gallons through four bedrooms, another 250 gallons for each bedroom past four, and half again if a garbage grinder feeds the tank. Walton's form asks about the disposal for exactly that reason, so we settle the kitchen plan before ordering the tank.↗↗
Land matters as much as bedrooms. On Monroe or county water, Walton wants 25,500 square feet of usable soil plus room for an equal replacement area, and ground within 50 feet of a stream or wetland does not count.↗

A commercial system is sized by gallons per day, not bedrooms. Walton bills $550 for a 1–1,000 gpd inspection and $850 up to 2,000 gpd; bigger flows step up again. We start by estimating daily use from the occupancy plan so the design lands in the right bracket.↗
Warning signs
When an old Monroe system needs replacing, not patching
Seeing two or more of these? Call before it gets worse.
- 1. The tank is steel or block and has rusted or cracked through
- 2. Trenches keep surfacing after two or more repairs
- 3. You are adding bedrooms and the tank predates the house plan
- 4. The old field sits under a driveway, pool or new addition
