The short answer

How does septic installation work in Walnut Grove, GA?

Outside the reach of Walnut Grove's small land-application sewer plant, a new house needs its own septic system permitted by Walton County Environmental Health. The county inspects a new residential system for $425, requires 25,500 square feet of usable soil on county water, and approves the work before it is covered.

Sewer or septic?

Will your Walnut Grove lot get sewer or a tank?

Walnut Grove treats its own sewage at a plant on Forrester Cemetery Road that spreads treated water on land rather than piping it to a river. The state permit caps that at 0.05 million gallons a day, which is tiny next to the growth along SR 81 and SR 138.

The city's 2022 plan counts the headroom its expansion buys: roughly 155 more homes and 24,000 gallons a day of commercial use. Once those allocations are spoken for, new houses on the outer roads plan on a tank and drain field.

How to tell which one you have

  • Ask the city whether a line runs along your frontage
  • Check whether neighbors' houses have cleanouts at the street or tanks in the yard
  • Look at the plat for a sewer easement

Soil & terrain

Ground under a new Walnut Grove field

The center of town maps as severely eroded Cecil sandy clay loam on 2 to 6 percent slopes. NRCS calls it somewhat limited for absorption fields because water moves slowly, which translates into longer trenches than a sandier county would need.

Three named creeks run within a couple of miles of downtown. Walton's lot ordinance ignores any land within 50 feet of a stream when it tallies usable soil, so creekside tracts lose part of their buildable field area.

From application to final inspection

  1. 01

Complete the Site Evaluation Form: bedrooms, water source, whether a disposal is planned, and gravel, chamber or alternative system.

  2. 02

Draw the lot: house and setbacks, wells here and next door, drives, buried utilities, stub-out location, proposed field, easements and flood plain.

  3. 03

Carve out room for a second field of equal size; Walton wants a replacement area reserved on every lot.

  4. 04

Build to the permit inside its 12-month life, then hold the cover until the specialist signs off.
