Bethlehem's wastewater: every lot on its own

Barrow County's wastewater division names its territory: unincorporated Barrow, Auburn, Statham and parts of Winder. Bethlehem is not on that list, and we found no town sewer utility either. The newcomer guide sends residents to Winder for water and gas, and to nobody for sewer.↗↗

The town code closes the shortcuts. Shared drain fields are banned, and so are private plants that serve more than one property. So a subdivision here cannot pool its wastewater; each house gets a tank and field of its own.↗

How to tell which one you have

Look for green or black riser lids in the yard, usually 10 to 20 feet off the back or side of the house.
Check your Winder utility bill: a water line with no sewer charge points to a tank.
Ask Barrow County Environmental Health for the permit record on your address.

The Bethlehem story

A Christmas-card town where growth stops at the property line

Bethlehem sits on SR 11, four miles south of Winder and nine north of Monroe. It borrowed its name from a Methodist church founded in 1796, and every street in town is named from the nativity story. Mail sent here each December leaves with a holiday postmark.↗↗

The county plan calls Bethlehem the Barrow town under the most pressure from growth beyond its limits. Sewer and SR 316 draw subdivisions, a medical campus and Lanier Tech's campus to south Barrow, and those projects bracket the town. Inside the line, though, the homes still flush to a backyard tank.↗

The biggest wastewater operation in town is not residential at all. Harrison Poultry's treatment site on Smith Mill Road holds a state land-application permit for about 1.23 million gallons a day. It handles the plant's own process water and does not serve homes.↗

Getting a Bethlehem septic job permitted

Town Hall does not issue septic permits. The county does, from its Winder office.

Call Barrow Environmental Health first. The district says Barrow's fees and forms are being updated and asks applicants to phone for current paperwork and prices.↗

Confirm the lot works. On public water, Barrow's ordinance wants 25,500 square feet of usable soil and a 100-foot width where the primary and replacement fields go.↗

Map out soils coded F or D, plus a 20-foot band around them. Ground that cannot hold a 50-foot drain line does not count toward the lot.↗

Cecil clay in town, rock and floodplain at the edges

The center of Bethlehem maps as Cecil sandy loam on 6 to 10 percent slopes. It is workable for septic but slow to drain, so fields need enough trench length. Gentler 2 to 6 percent Cecil lies toward the south and southeast.↗

Two pockets change the plan. West of the center, Musella cobbly clay loam sits on shallow bedrock. North, Chewacla loam floods often and holds a high water table. Both rate very limited, and a field there usually means a different spot or design.↗

Half of Bethlehem's houses predate 1993. Many original drain fields are past 30 years, which is when trenches in slow Cecil clay tend to clog and surface. We see tanks that still hold but fields that no longer take water.↗

Barrow's ordinance asks every lot to keep room for an equal-size replacement field. On a 1990s lot, locating that reserve is step one of a repair quote.↗
