The Newnan story
Sewer since the turn of the century
Newnan put in public utilities early. Streetlights came on in November 1891. In 1893 the city began pumping untreated water from Bolton Springs to its first 100 customers. By October 1895, the utility's history records, sewerage had become a problem; the council ordered a survey, and the system was finished in early 1900. A 1904 act created the Board of Water, Sewerage and Light Commissioners that still oversees Newnan Utilities.↗
The houses above those pipes are old too. Newnan came through the Civil War largely intact as a hospital city, keeping much of its antebellum architecture, and architect Kennon Perry designed many of the homes built in the early 1900s.↗
